Discus 4.0 and higher

The board menu is controlled by the template file found in:

(administration directory)/template/ui/bd-menu.tmpl

To make your customizations permanent, follow the general instructions for interface customization.

You may wish to look below for general tips.

Discus 3.10 and lower

The main menu of the board is called "board-menu.html" and is in the "HTML Files" directory. You can edit the file using any editor without causing the scripts to fail. (Be sure that editing this file does not cause your editor to edit all the files on your site! Microsoft Front Page is one editor which does edit every file on your site when you edit one file, so be extremely careful when using that program.)

General menu editing tips - all versions
  • According to the Discus license agreement, you may not remove the link to the "Program Credits" page in the freeware version of Discus. Keep this in mind as you edit your menu.

  • Some people have created small GIF files to replace the text links. Others have changed the color or font of options on the menu. These simple changes can be made using an ordinary HTML editor. The customization of your main menu is limited only by your own imagination (and what's possible in HTML).

  • Some people prefer to eliminate the links to certain functions that won't be used on their board. For example, if you are not going to have username/password combinations for posting to your board, you have no need for the link to the "User Profile" utility. You may delete the link to any unused items except you may not delete the link to the "Program Credits" page in the freeware version. Many people choose to eliminate the link to Administration so as to keep curious people away from your administrator interface.
