"404 Not Found" message

Procedures for diagnosing a 404 (Not Found) message.

There are several places where this error could occur. In all cases, it is a problem with the setup parameters you entered or your server configuration.

  • When accessing your ftpdiag.cgi script: Sometimes a virtual server is incorrectly set up and it looks for scripts that you expect to find in http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin by incorrectly looking in http://yourhosts.domain.com/cgi-bin instead. If your ftpdiag.cgi script is in your cgi-bin directory but you get a "Not Found" error when accessing it through your browser, contact your web host to have them resolve this problem. They will need to properly configure your virtual server.

  • When accessing topics: If you receive this error when clicking on a topic that you recently created, check out the following documents:

  • Accessing icons on newly installed board: If none of your icons show up correctly, try creating a topic to see if the topic works.

  • When accessing your board: The HTML URL and the HTML directory you entered during setup do not correspond. The setup script created the HTML files in the directory you entered, but since the HTML URL does not correspond to that directory, the HTML files do not exist at the URL you entered. Run setup again, making sure that the directory corresponds to the URL.

  • When accessing scripts: The Script URL and the Script Directory you entered during setup do not correspond. The setup script created the script files in the directory you entered, but since the script URL does not correspond to that directory, the script files do not exist at the URL you entered. Run setup again, making sure that the directory corresponds to the URL. This error is the most common "Not Found" error, mainly because many servers require an unusual URL to access CGI scripts. Check your ISP's documentation thoroughly to determine the cause of the problem.

Steps to determining the cause of a "Not Found" error are:

  • Go to your server in an FTP or telnet session. Make sure the file that is not found actually exists where you think it should.

  • Enter the URL by hand (do not take a URL that is automatically produced by the setup program). If you see the file when entering the URL by hand, then you got the URL wrong in the setup.

  • Double check the spelling and the case of the URL you are entering and of the directory where the files are supposed to be.

  • Double check your ISP's documents about CGI scripts and your HTML files.

DiscusWare support is not able to help you resolve "Not Found" errors for the obvious reason that we do not have access to your server to check your directories and URLs. It's your responsibility to find the files that were created on your server, not ours.
