CGIWrap error when upgrading with Version Manager

Why you may get a 'CGIWrap error' when you attempt to upgrade Discus 3.01 with your Version Manager.

It has been reported to us that the following error message is received when attempting to use the Version Manager to upgrade Discus 3.01 or before via the FTP process:

CGIWrap was unable to find the user 'discus' in the password file on this server. Check the URL and try again.

Explanation:

This error occurs because the Version Manager (and registration procedure) for version 3.01 and before was submitted to a form on our former web server, www.chem.hope.edu. (Discus started as a project in the Hope College Chemistry Department and was hosted on its servers for the first several years of the project.) In July of 2001, DiscusWare's web hosting moved to a dedicated server.

The error message you receive is generated by our old server (www.chem.hope.edu) and occurs because DiscusWare's account (former username 'discus') is no longer hosted on that machine. This is not a problem with your Discus board or with our new server.

FTP Upgrades from version 3.01 are no longer supported. To upgrade your version 3.01 board, you must use either the telnet/SSH method (for Unix) or the console method (for Windows). Please note that even Discus 3.10 is so far out of support (since mid-2002) that the below procedures are deprecated as well, but links to the relevant documentation are found here for historical purposes:
