User self-registration, typically implemented via the "Register" button (or, in earlier versions, "Instant Registration") is the first step in Discus Professional's user self-registration feature. By following the ensuing screens, visitors can automatically register for a user account on the board. At the discretion of the moderator, who configures this option, the account can be instantly granted or sent to a queue where it is later approved or rejected by a moderator.

User self-registration is a feature that is available in Discus Professional. This feature is not available in the freeware version.

To enable user self-registration on your Discus Professional board, you should:

1. Log into your Discus Professional board as the superuser (generally "admin"). Click Options Manager from the left frame. Check the box next to "User self-registration enabled." Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click the "Save Options" button.

2. Click "User Manager" from the left frame. Go into one of your existing groups for which you wish to enable user self-registration by clicking on the group name. Choose one of the options under "User Self-Registration" for that group and save your setting by clicking "Save Settings." NOTE: In all presently available versions of Discus, the group in which you enable user self-registration must be the owner of at least one topic on your board.

If you get the error message that you cannot register because none of the topics on the board allow self-registration, you need to repeat step 2. Read the last sentence of that step carefully.
