Explanation and suggestions for what to do if topics are correctly displayed in administration and utilities but do not appear on the board topics page.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This problem affects only version 3.10 and lower of Discus. In version 4.0, the equivalent problem is a not found error accessing new topics.

First, check the obvious

1. Have you created topics at all? Check your Board Manager to make sure topics exist.

2. Have you selected to hide the topics in the "Properties" section of the Board Manager? If you've hidden all your topics, this is why they don't show up.

3. Have you clicked in the frame displaying the topics page and chosen "Reload Frame" in order to make sure your browser isn't just pulling the page out of its cache?

If none of the above explains it, you have a problem...

If none of the above provides a satisfactory explanation for your topics that are not appearing, please confirm that you see these symptons:

  • You see at least one topic listed in your Board Manager
  • You see at least one topic listed in New Messages
  • You see no topics on your board topics page

If you're still with us in this document, the problem is that your "HTML directory" does not match your "HTML URL". It is unusual that this problem would not be accompanied with a 404 (File Not Found) error. However, this has been known to occur if you have one partially installed and one fully installed Discus board on your server (generally, the partially installed board is a failed installation attempt).

The solution is to repair your discus.conf file:

  • Download discus.conf to your local machine.

  • Open discus.conf in a text editor (NOT a Word Processor).

  • Edit the line starting with "html_dir=" so that it reflects the proper path. *

  • Save the discus.conf file.

  • Re-upload your discus.conf file to your server. Use ASCII mode and set permissions on the file to 0755 (rwxr-xr-x).

  • Log into Discus and confirm that no topics are shown and no error messages are present. Your Topic Manager should now put files properly on the topics page.

* This is potentially the most confusing step of the process, and is also the step that DiscusWare can provide absolutely no support for whatsoever. We do not know how your server is configured. If all else fails, we suggest that you remove all Discus boards (and failed installations) and then start the installation again from scratch.
