Procedure for changing the URL to a Discus board without changing servers.

This document will tell you how to move your Discus board from one URL to a different URL on the same server. If you are transferring your Discus board from one server to a different server, you need this page instead.

Procedure - version 4.0 and higher
  1. Optional but highly recommended: You should make a backup of all of the files on your Discus board prior to performing this operation.

  2. Obtain your discus.conf file from your server by FTP. Transfer this file to your local machine using ASCII mode. Open the discus.conf file in a text editor (such as Notepad) -- do NOT use an HTML editor like Front Page. Change the html_url and script_url to reflect your new host name and URL.

  3. If you have changed the actual directories of your Discus board, change the admin_dir, html_dir, and script_dir as appropriate in your discus.conf file. Then, on your server, move the directories as appropriate. You don't need to do this step if you are not physically moving files around on the server (like if you're changing just the host name).

  4. Go to administration and log in as the board administrator, and go to Appearance Manager - Regeneration. Make sure that the box is checked for moving from one server to another and make sure that the old URL of your board appears in the box. Regenerate your board and wait for the procedure to finish.

Procedure - version 3.10 and before

  4. Go to the freeware Discus download page or Discus Professional download page as appropriate. Navigate the menus until you are presented with the FTP upgrade form where you paste in your discus.conf file to generate an upgrade. Type in the proper path to Perl (look at the top line of your board-contact.cgi script if you aren't sure) and paste in your new discus.conf file. Generate the distribution.

  5. Upload your distribution as instructed in the readme.html file.

  6. Go to administration and log in as the board administrator. In version 3.10, go to Board Manager and regenerate the board under the "Page Templates" section. Make sure that the box is checked for moving from one server to another and make sure that the old URL of your board appears in the box. Regenerate your board and wait for the procedure to finish.
