What is a topic?

A topic is a broad area of discussion created by the board administrator and listed on the top page of the discussion board. Posting and reading privileges for all pages within your topic as well as moderator editing privileges are assigned at the topic level.

Before any Discus board can accept threads and messages, at least one topic must be created at the top level, by the board administrator. By permitting only the board administrator to create topics at the top level, Discus avoids the unwieldy situation of an appearance where users are given free reign to create chaos.

For those of you familiar with other discussion products, some of them refer to top-level topics as "boards" or "forums".
