A category is a classification that displays with topics on the topics page. The category is simply a placeholder; there are never any subtopics or other pages within a category.

Categories are not necessary, but are often added for visual appeal of separating top-level topics into logical groupings. Categories are added and maintained by the board administrator; since there are never any subtopics or posts within a category itself, there is no need to assign moderators to the category. The category itself does not have any associated posting or reading privileges, and it does not appear in the board's structure anywhere other than on the topics page.
